Can you help Barry of Sydney? He's hoping someone may be able to supply the answer to the question he raised in the following e-mail he sent us.

Thank you for your marvellous site, a boon to all jazz lovers.

You mention a couple of tours of Oz arranged by the late Kym Bonython,
some of which I saw in Sydney, at the Hordern Pavilion at the old
Sydney Showgrounds (now Fox Studios). I have been trying to find if
there is any record of all the tours Bonython organised during the
late 60s-early 70s. I can (imperfectly) recall a couple, one a
double bill featuring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (all old New
Orleans musicians over 70) with the second half "Kings of Bop", with
Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Jerry Mulligan, Sonny Stitt,
Illinois Jacquet, Kai Winding (I think) and some other well known names.

Another Bonython concert at around the same time was Benny Goodman and his Sextette (or possibly Septette). I'm sure there were others, but
I don't recall the details and am keen to find some archive of the
period. Do you know of any such?

I recall one occasion with great pleasure A mate and I were driving
through Wooloomoolooon our way to the SCG to watch a Rugby
international, when we noticed lots of musicians standing around a lot
of flat-bed trucks. Intrigued we stopped to find out what was going
on and were informed that they were planning to drive through the city
streets playing a tribute to Louis Armstrong who had recently died. We
were invited to climb aboard one of the trucks, and as jazz beats
Rugby any day, we joined in. Right up Pitt St and down George,
listening to the cream of Oz jazz for a couple of hours - life
doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks again for your site and if you can give me any leads on the
history of the Bonython I will be most appreciative.

Best regards
Barry

Just a short note to congratulate you, again, on your wonderful website "The Jazzman". I have again read through the wide variety of fascinating topics, history and interesting antedotes.
You obviously spend much time and effort in researching, producing, maintaining and updating a topic which is so widely read and appreciated by so many. It is a credit to you.
With best wishes,
David, Albury. New South Wales, Australia

"I heard the Jazz man radio show (Jazz on Tuesdays) for the first time
last week. It is fun: a nice selection of cool jazz plus informed and
upbeat commentary by Barry Skinner. The web site is also a fun…personal, eclectic, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable view of the jazz elements.
Great stuff."
